As a growing engineering school specialized in Earth, Life, Environmental and Digital sciences (4000 students – 520 employees), UniLaSalle gathers all the equipment conducive to teaching and research on four campuses : Amiens, Beauvais, Rennes et Rouen.

As part of the strengthening of its expertise in environmental assessment, UniLaSalle is searching for a teacher/researcher in Environmental Assessment – Life Cycle Assessment Permanent contract

Missions

Attached to the Director of the Rennes campus, the selected candidate will be responsible for the following tasks:

Pedagogical and accompanying activities (60%)

The lessons will be carried out within the different education programs provided on the Rennes campus, either to students or apprentices, if applicable:

  • MSc program in Environmental Engineering
  • BSc Environment and Sustainable Development
  • Master of Science Circular Economy
  • Master of Science Sustainable Management and Eco Innovation

The recruited teacher/researcher will teach in French and in English in her/his field of competence, in the topics:

  • Environmental Assessment
  • Life Cycle Assessment

Additional competence in the following topics would be a plus:

  • Social Life Cycle Assessment
  • Urban Metabolism
  • Industrial Symbiosis
  • Sustainability

The recruited teacher/researcher will be responsible for supervising the projects and internships of work-study students and apprentices, and will oversee a class, or a program in connection with the director of studies.

The recruited teacher/researcher will be responsible for the MSc in Sustainable Management and Eco-Innovation, a joint degree with Rennes School of Business (approximately 60 students).

Like the other teachers of the school, the recruited teacher/researcher will participate in the promotion and the student selection days which represent about ten days per year.

Research and engineering activities (40%)

The candidate will develop her / his research project within the Cyclann unit which aims to contribute to the establishment of a circular economy by developing research covering a broad area of expertise. The objectives and fundamental issues are twofold:

  • Develop and optimize the effluent and resource management and treatment systems by making it possible to recover their material and energy content
  • Develop multi-criteria environmental indicators as well as their evaluation method allowing to support the territories and their actors in the transition to a circular economy.

One of the scientific objectives of Cyclann is to contribute to limiting the impacts and nuisances of discharges, and their management. This approach will make it possible to actively contribute to the implementation of circular economy approaches and policies, at the territorial level, while allowing the integration of the principles of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and thus meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The scientific project of the team is moving towards the recovery/treatment/transformation of urban and peri-urban organic resources into molecules, materials, and energy for different uses and applications. This systemic approach also includes environmental assessment, life cycle thinking, ecotoxicology, the development of transition indicators, urban resilience, ecological engineering, adapting cities to climate change…

The team wishes to develop its capacities to meet the needs of multidisciplinary research and engineering projects.

This recruitment will also allow the Cyclann unit to consolidate collaborations with companies and academic partners, allowing them to provide LCA expertise on specific studies.
For example, today, the most popular metrics used in the analysis of eco-processes mainly focus on technical and economic performance criteria, while it is just as essential to develop/optimize these processes to make them more efficient from an environmental point of view (thus minimizing their impact on the environment). It therefore appears that the LCA methodology has strong potential to include environmental criteria in the analysis/development of eco-processes as well as industrial processes.

The recruited teacher/researcher will have to apply LCA methodology to processes to take into account and/or reduce the presence of micropollutants and/or pathogens in different matrices (water, air, soil) in the industrial context as well as in technical innovations which will make it possible to bridge the gap with the eco-design of products.

Profile required:

  • You hold a doctorate in Environmental Assessment. Ideally, skills in eco-design and innovation engineering would be an asset.
  • You have experience in teaching and research.
  • Good knowledge of software for LCA (e.g. SimaPro or other tools: proficiency in the USEtox® method would be an asset), and, if possible, proficiency in Material Flow Analysis (e.g. Umberto software).
  • You enjoy sharing your knowledge with a variety of audiences and you are interested in educational and digital innovations.
  • You can work with the economic world (companies, communities) in the context of applied and multidisciplinary research.
  • You can work in a team, particularly in the context of the design and production of teaching units, including distance courses.
  • You can carry out part of your teaching in English

Terms of employment:

  • Permanent position based in Rennes to be filled from February 2022
  • Occasional trips to Paris or to the other UniLaSalle campuses are to be expected.
  • Remuneration according to profile and experience
