Biochar is obtained from organic matter (forest residues, waste, etc.). It is mainly composed of carbon and has various applications such as agriculture, methanization, development of innovative materials, water treatment...

The National Biochars Conference brought together 200 actors working on the subject on the territory.

A day to understand the stakes of the Biochars sectors

It is within the framework of the Interreg Three C program that Bretagne Eco-Entreprises, AILE and UniLaSalle have decided to bring together biomass producers, biochars distributors, researchers, institutions and associations in order to exchange on operational actions to be carried out in collective. The final objective being to allow the biochars sectors to become sustainable and to take up the economic, regulatory and technical challenges.

What is the potential of the biochars sector? How to store carbon? What impact on climate change? What is the response to soil quality?

These are just some of the questions that the speakers at the conference will be asked to answer.

The Cyclann (UniLaSalle Rennes), and Aghyle, UT&A (UniLaSalle Beauvais and Rouen) research units present their expertise

The research around Biochar has allowed the teacher-researchers of 3 UniLaSalle campuses to collaborate and to lead workshops and round-table discussions during these 1st Conferences.
Thus, the Aghyle, Transformations & Agroressources (UT&A) and Cyclann units of UniLaSalle Beauvais, UniLaSalle Rouen and UniLaSalle Rennes are working together on tests, analyses and solutions.

  • Lydia Fryda, teacher-researcher and biochars and bioenergy expert, testified on the diversity of biochars: how they are produced and what is the impact on the different qualities, the European certifications and the state of research on the uses of biochars in stormwater management in cities, wastewater treatment, biochars in materials (example of the Stockholm project)
  • David Houben, director of the agrosciences college, gave an exhaustive presentation of the state of research on agricultural and horticultural uses.
